Connecticut Travels to Face South Carolina in NCAA Baseball Super Regional

The Connecticut Huskies head to Columbia, S.C., on Saturday to take on South Carolina in a best-of-three series at the NCAA Baseball Super Regional. Connecticut is the third BIG EAST team to qualify for the Super Regionals, joining Louisville (2009 and 2007) and Notre Dame (2002). The Huskies are the first team from the Northeast Region to make it to the Super Regional round since the NCAA changed to the current format in 1999.

Connecticut won the Clemson Regional coming out of the losers' bracket. The Huskies dropped the first game of the regional, 13-1 to Coastal Carolina. The BIG EAST regular-season champions went on to win their next four games, including defeating No. 1 seed Clemson twice to win the regional crown for the first time in school history.

The Huskies defeated Sacred Heart 13-3 in the first elimination game on the regional. Ryan Fuller, Mike Nemeth and Billy Ferriter combined to go 10-for-14 in the games with four RBI as nine different Huskies drove in runs.

Connecticut moved on to beat Coastal Carolina 12-6 the next day, getting payback for the Game 1 loss. Freshman Brian Ward threw a career-high eight innings in the contest to improve to 6-1 on the year, allowing three runs on six hits. Nemeth had four hits in the contest with two RBI to give UConn a shot at No. 1 seed Clemson for the regional title.

The Huskies would have to beat Clemson twice to take the regional, and needed a dramatic finish in the first game to keep their hopes alive. Fuller hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score LJ Mazzilli and lift Connecticut past Clemson 7-6. The Huskies left little doubt in the second game, jumping all over Clemson for a 14-1 victory. The Huskies scored three times in the first inning, five in the fifth and six in the eighth to blow past host Clemson for the regional title. Fuller was the star against offensively, going 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI.

South Carolina moved into the Super Regional after winning the Columbia Regional with a 3-0 record. The 2010 national champions notched a win over Georgia Southern and two over Stetson.
