Two BIG EAST conference games were played on Wednesday night, with Louisville opening BIG EAST play with a victory, Marquette also handed Rutgers its first home loss this season.
No. rv/23 Louisville (12-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Cardinals defeated Seton Hall (7-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) 73-54 at the KFC Yum! Center. Louisville built a 22-point lead just 10 minutes into the game to take control of the contest. UofL scored 24 of the first 26 points of the game while Seton Hall missed its first nine shots from the field. Mike Marra and Peyton Siva each scored 14 points to lead the UofL offense that had nine players score in the game. Stephan Van Treese pulled dow a career-high 10 rebounds for Louisville. The Cardinals held Seton Hall to a season-low 29 percent shooting. Freshman Fuquan Edwin led the Pirates with 18 points and nine rebounds while Jeff Robinson added 14.
Marquette (11-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) handed Rutgers (9-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) its first home loss of the season, beating the Scarlet Knights 73-65. Guard Darius-Johnson Odom scored a career-high 29 points on 9-of-14 shooting to pace the Golden Eagles. Johnson-Odom, forward Jae Crowder and forward Jimmy Butler accounted for 60 of Marquette's 73 points. Rutgers closed within four points in the second half, trailing 46-42, but missed three straight shots in the same sequence. Johnson-Odom then scored 10 points as Marquette outscored Rutgers 16-10 over the next several minutes to open up a 62-52 lead. Guard James Beatty put in a career-high 24 points for the Scarlet Knights, who fell to 7-1 at the RAC this season. MU has beaten Rutgers in the last five meetings between the two teams.
Two games dot the schedule on Tuesday. No. 24/25 Cincinnati plays a nonconference game against crosstown rival Xavier at Fifth Third Arena at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. No. 7/7 Villanova also plays its first BIG EAST road game in a matchup with USF at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
