Creighton won the battle of 3-0 BIG EAST squads on Sunday when the Bluejays prevailed 95-89 over Xavier before 17,589 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Both team's top players stepped up with superior performances. Creighton's Doug McDermott had 35 points and Xavier's Semaj Christon scored 27 points.
Both teams had entered the contest with eight-game winning streaks. The game was a fitting conclusion to a weekend of games that all went down to the wire.
Satruday began with Villanova and St. John's going toe-to-toe at Madison Square Garden. The Wildcats made a few more plays in the final minutes using a 10-2 run to subdue the Red Storm 74-67. Forward JayVaughn Pinkston led five VU players in double figures with 15 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Josh Hart scored 14 points. The Red Storm's D'Angelo Harrison led all scorers with 22 points.
Marquette led Seton Hall 40-26 at halftime, but had to hang on for a 67-66 victory in Milwaukee. Reserve guard Todd Mayo continued his strong offensive contributions, scoring a game-high 19 points. Forward Jamil Wilson helped with 16 points and 11 rebounds. For the Pirates, guard Brian Oliver finished with 15 points, including a pair of late 3-pointers that almost gave the Hall the win.
Butler is 0-4 in the BIG EAST with three of the losses coming in overtime. The latest excruciating defeat was a 70-67 decision to Georgetown. After trailing by nine points with 6:55 left, the Bulldogs had grabbed the lead. But the Hoyas' Markel Starks hit a game-tying 3-pointer late in regulation and Aaron Bowen made a critical steal in the final seconds of the extra session to Georgetown the victory. Butler's Kellen Dunham scored a game-high 21 points.
