One close game and one not-so-close game were the results of a pair of BIG EAST contests on Tuesday.
The close one was a 77-75 victory for DePaul over St. John's at Allstate Arena. The Red Storm had put together a 17-6 run to gain a 74-70 lead with 4:35 left, but the Blue Demons turned up the defense and allowed only one point the rest of the way.
Four DePaul starters provided 69 of the team's 77 points. Freshman guard Billy Garrett, Jr. led the way with 21 points and five assists. Backcourt partner Brandon Young finished with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists. Forward Cleveland Melvin blocked a career-high six shots and had 16 points and seven rebounds. Center Tommy Hamilton IV had 13 points and six boards.
St. John's was led by guard D'Angelo Harrison, who scored a game-high 24 points.
Creighton came out firing early in its home game against Butler and raced to a 53-24 lead by halftime. The final was an 88-60 win for the Bluejays, who have won 10 in a row overall and are 5-0 in the BIG EAST.
Doug McDermott scored 28 points in 27 minutes. Creighton shot 55.6 percent from the field.
Butler was led, as usual, by Kellen Dunham, who had 12 points.
There's only one BIG EAST game on Wednesday's schedule. Georgetown plays at Xavier. The Hoyas are coming off a 70-67 overtime win at Butler. The Musketeers are 11-0 at home.
