No. 21/rv West Virginia (13-5, 4-2 BIG EAST) grabbed a 56-46 victory over USF in the lone BIG EAST game on Sunday. The victory pulled the Mountaineers into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with Connecticut and Louisville. Guard Casey Mitchell notched his first career double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead WVU, while forwards Kevin Jones and John Flowers also added 13 points each. The Mountaineers led by as many as 16 in the contest, as a 9-0 run to start the second half gave the home squad a 40-24 advantage. The Bulls would come as close as six with 1:44 remaining after a 3 by Jawanza Poland. USF was led by Augustus Gilchrist, who notched his third straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Big Monday continues tonight with a top-25 matchup when No. 16/16 Notre Dame visits No. 4/4 Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. on ESPN. In BIG EAST regular-season play, the series is tied 11-11. The Irish have won the last two meetings between the two squads, including a 50-45 win in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals last March.
