Creighton's Doug McDermott scored 39 points -- and the Bluejays needed every one of them -- to defeat St. John's 63-60 Tuesday before a sellout crowd of 17,515 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.
McDermott's 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left was the difference. St. John's was down by 18 points with 12 minutes to play, but rallied to tie the game 60-60 with two free throws by freshman Rysheed Jordan with 11 seconds left.
The 20th-ranked Bluejays are 12-0 at home this season and in first place in the BIG EAST with an 8-1 league mark. They are off until Feb. 7 when they host DePaul.
The Red Storm had their three-game winning streak end. They return to Madison Square Garden Saturday afternoon for a game against Marquette. It is the first game of the Super Saturday Doubleheader on FOX Sports 1. The second game is Georgetown versus No. 7/6 Michigan State.
The one game per day schedule this week -- all on FOX Sports 1 -- continues Wednesday when Butler travels to Seton Hall. A close game would not be surprising. Ten of Butler's 20 games have been decided by five points or less or have gone into overtime. Nine of Seton Hall's 20 games fall into the same category.
