Marquette Game Notes | Louisville Game Notes
The No. 25/25 Marquette University men's basketball team (15-4, 6-1 BIG EAST) continues BIG EAST Conference play with action at No. 12/13 Louisville (17-4, 5-3 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. CT. ESPN will feature Marquette's 12th national television broadcast of the campaign, with Dan Shulman (play-by-play) and Jay Bilas (analyst) calling the action. Sunday's outing marks the beginning of a stretch that will see Marquette play five of its next seven games on the road.
Vander Comes Out Of The Blue In Win Over USF
Junior guard Vander Blue netted a career-high 30 points Monday night in the victory over USF, which included 21 points following halftime.
The Madison, Wis., native finished 13-of-20 from the floor in 34 minutes of action and also chipped in six rebounds, one assist and a steal. His previous high of 26 points came against Winthrop last season in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. Monday's scoring output marked just the sixth time in Blue's 90-game career he has surpassed the 20-point plateau in a game.
Blue is the first Marquette player to score 30-or-more points in a victory since Steve Novak collected 41 points against Connecticut on Jan. 3, 2006 in the program's first-ever BIG EAST Conference game.
Marquette-Louisville Series Dates Back To 1951
Marquette and Louisville have faced off a total of 78 times in program history, with the Cardinals owning a 42-26 overall advantage.
The series began in 1951 and the programs have met at least once each year since 1996 when both teams were members of Conference USA. Louisville has claimed seven of the last nine outings, including last year's quarterfinal contest (84-71) in the BIG EAST Conference Championship.
Lockett Picking Up Production In League Play
Senior Trent Lockett reached double figures in points in back-to-back games (vs. Providence and USF) for the first time this year after his 10-point effort Monday night.
He also chipped in eight rebounds in 33 minutes of action and is averaging an impressive 6.1 boards per game from his guard position in league action. Lockett also matched an MU best with 13 points in the Jan. 26 victory over Providence.
The Golden Valley, Minn., native finished with a season-best 10 rebounds in the Jan. 5 win over Georgetown and has grabbed five-or-more in all but one BIG EAST outing. He grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds on two occasions while at Arizona State.
Lockett earned his undergraduate degree at ASU in three years and was granted a waiver by the NCAA allowing him to play in 2012-13 without sitting out. He is enrolled in the sports leadership master's program at Marquette.
Marquette Set To Collect Frequent Flyer Miles
While Marquette is currently tied for first place in the BIG EAST Conference with a 6-1 record, the road to a league title becomes even more difficult as February arrives.
The Golden Eagles, who begin a stretch of five road games in seven outings Sunday at Louisville, have more games (seven) away from home remaining on the schedule than any other team in the conference. Marquette is the only BIG EAST team with seven away games remaining on their schedule. Connecticut and Notre Dame have six road contests, and all but Pittsburgh and Rutgers have five games away from home remaining.
Marquette is 19-19 on the road in BIG EAST play under head coach Buzz Williams since the 2008-09 campaign. MU's win total is the fourth-best total among league schools during that time frame.
