Top seeded Georgetown and No. 2 Syracuse collided in a championship game battle that needed overtime to determine a winner.
The Hoyas, led by BIG EAST Tournament MVP Patrick Ewing, came out on top of the hotly contested clash 82-71. Georgetown beat Providence and St. John’s to reach the final.
New York schoolboy legend Pearl Washington once again saved his best for the Garden fans, leading the Orangemen with a dazzling 27 points and six assists in a losing cause. Washington and teammate Andre Hawkins were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The game launched the Syracuse and Hoyas rivalry to new heights of intensity and competitiveness and was just one of many memorable tournament clashes to come.
Three weeks later, Georgetown was crowned NCAA champion.
