Sixty-eight points were just enough for Creighton and St. John's to earn close victories on the road on Thursday.
The Bluejays were locked in a 40-minute battle at Butler and were able to close the game with a 7-0 run and record a 68-63 win. The Bulldogs had taken a 63-61 lead on a layup by Khyle Marshall with 1:14 left.
McDermott finished with 26 points and reserve Will Artino contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The victory was the 100th at Creighton for coach Greg McDermott. The Bluejays notched their 20th win and improved to 10-2 in the BIG EAST. Creighton has won 20 or more games in 15 of the last 16 years and at least 10 league games for the past 18 seasons.
The Bluejays will return home to host Villanova Sunday afternoon in a battle of the two teams at the top of the standings.
At the Prudential Center, St. John's center Chris Obekpa made a free throw with 2.1 seconds left to lift his team to a 68-67 win over Seton Hall. The Red Storm also beat the Pirates by a point 77-76 on Jan. 23.
St. John's had a balanced scoring attack led by D'Angelo Harrison's 12 points. The Pirates' Fuquan Edwin led all scorers with 25 points.
The Red Storm have a four-game BIG EAST winning streak.
On Saturday, Marquette hosts Xavier in a game that will be televised on FOX. The Golden Eagles are in fourth place in the BIG EAST with a 6-5 record. The Musketeers are a game ahead with a 7-4 mark.
Providence will be working to end a three-game slide when it hosts DePaul. The Friars are locked in a three-way tie for fifth place with Georgetown and St. John's.
