A late winter blizzard brought New York City to a standstill but it couldn’t stop the BIG EAST Tournament.
Playing before a half-full Garden, Seton Hall crushed Syracuse 103-70 in the most lopsided championship game in tournament history. The snow hit during the semifinal day and kept coming down. During the Syracuse and St. John’s semifinal game, water leaked through the roof and ball boys dried the court.
BIG EAST Player of the Year and Dave Gavitt Trophy winner Terry Dehere paced the top-seeded Pirates. Seton Hall was never seriously threatened in the tournament as it rolled over Georgetown (83-69) in the quarterfinals and Providence (69-60) in the semifinals.
Dehere was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Arturas Karnishovas and Jerry Walker.
