Some deadeye shooting carried Creighton and Xavier to victory on Wednesday night.
Creighton made 62.2 percent of its shots from the field in an 85-70 win at Marquette, which pushed the Bluejays a half game ahead of Villanova into first place in the BIG EAST at 12-2.
Creighton’s Doug McDermott hit his nation’s leading scoring average with 25 points and Ethan Wragge tossed in six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points. McDermott keeps climbing on the NCAA’s all-time scoring chart. He passed Houston’s Elvin Hayes (2,884 points) and North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough (2,872).
Xavier hit at a 64.3 percent clip in an 83-64 win over visiting DePaul. Forward Justin Martin notched a career scoring high with 22 points. Semaj Christon added 17 points.
The Musketeers, who moved into sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST with an 8-5 record, held the Blue Demons scoreless for the first 4:24 of the game and never trailed.
Georgetown at Seton Hall is the lone game on Thursday’s schedule. The Hoyas are trying to get back to .500 in the BIG EAST standings. They stand at 6-7. The Pirates are aiming for a season sweep in the series after they beat Georgetown 67-57 at the Verizon Center on Jan. 18.
