Connecticut rolled to its second consecutive BIG EAST crown by trouncing St. John's 82-63 in the final in a preview of what was to come for the Huskies.
Three weeks later the Huskies celebrated another championship, that one the national title.
After narrowly beating Seton Hall 57-56 in the quarterfinals, Connecticut never was seriously challenged the rest of the tournament. In the semifinals the Huskies overwhelmed Syracuse 71-50.
Rugged power forward Kevin Freeman led the way for the Huskies with support from Richard Hamilton. Freeman poured in 52 points while grabbing 14 boards in the tournament and the Dave Gavitt Trophy.
Hamilton and teammate Khalid El-Amin were named to the All-Tournament team along with Erick Barkley of St. John's, Tim James of Miami and Etan Thomas of the Orangemen.
