This time it was St. John’s time to cut down the Garden nets as the Red Storm turned the tables on Connecticut 80-70 in the BIG EAST championship game.
This rivalry was intensifying both on the court and on the benches where St. John’s head coach Mike Jarvis and Huskies’ Jim Calhoun were raising the heat.
Sharp-shooting guard Bootsy Thornton led the Red Storm hitting on 21 of 41 shots in the tournament to take home the David Gavitt Trophy. Teammate Lavor Postell was named to the All-Tournament team.
It was not all easy going for St. John’s. The Red Storm held off Villanova 75-70 in the quarterfinals and edged Miami 58-57 in the semifinals.
It was the first title for the Red Storm since 1986.
