In the first of three consecutive BIG EAST championship games between the programs, Connecticut prevailed 74-65 over Pittsburgh in a double-overtime thriller.
Dave Gavitt Trophy winner Caron Butler led the Huskies. The shot of the tournament was a long 3-pointer by guard Taliek Brown, who was known more for his defense. Teammate Ben Gordon was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Panthers had a shot to win at the end of the first extra session. Star guard Brandin Knight, slowed by a leg injury, just missed a half-court shot at the buzzer. Knight and teammate Ontario Lett were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
This was the first BIG EAST tournament post 9/11. Seated on the bench for each game as honorary coaches were first responders from NYFD, NYPD, Port Authority and MTA police.
