West Virginia’s colorful center Kevin Pittsnogle became an overnight star with his 3-point shooting as he led the upstart No. 8 seeded Mountaineers to the final before losing to No. 3 seeded Syracuse 68-59.

As Pittsnogle scored, West Virginia fans started yelling that the other team had been “pittsnogled." The Mountaineers surprised No. 1 seed Boston College 78-72 in the quarterfinals and No. 4 seed Villanova 78-76 in the semifinals.

Syracuse had its own star, Hakim Warrick, who won the Dave Gavitt Trophy. His teammates, Gerry McNamara and Josh Pace, along with Pittsnogle and Mike Gansey of West Virginia and Randy Foye of Villanova were named to the All-Tournament Team.
