PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The BIG EAST Conference has named Georgetown forward Otto Porter and St. John's forward JaKarr Sampson the winners of the league's weekly men's basketball honors for the week-ending March 3.
Porter was chosen as BIG EAST Player of the Weeek for the third straight week after he helped the Hoyas remain alone in first place in the BIG EAST standings as he averaged 25.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals while shooting 54.2 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from 3-point range in a 2-0 week. Porter scored 22 points, including the game-winning layup in the closing seconds of a 79-78 double-overtime win at Connecticut. He added 25 points with eight rebounds in a 64-51 win against Rutgers. Porter has averaged 19.7 points and 7.5 rebounds during the Hoyas' current 11-game winning streak.
Sampson, who was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the seventh time this season, scored 22 points with six rebounds and two blocks in the Red Storm's only game of the week — a 62-59 loss at Providence. Sampson has led St. John's in scoring in each of the last three games and is averaging 15.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in his rookie season.
