Coach John Thompson III guided Georgetown to its first title since 1989 when his famous father John Thompson, Jr., was the Hoyas’ coach.
Another title in the family was no big surprise.
“People ask me how often do I speak to my son about basketball," John Thompson, Jr., said. “I say, ‘How often does the Hershey family talk about chocolate?’”
Georgetown was the regular season champion and had a relatively easy time in the final with a 65-42 win over third-seeded Pittsburgh. The one scare for the top-seeded Hoyas came in the semifinals in an 84-82 win over fourth-seeded Notre Dame.
Georgetown forward Jeff Green swept the BIG EAST Player of the Year and Dave Gavitt Trophy awards while teammates Roy Hibbert and DaJuan Summers were named to the All-Tournament Team.
