In the BIG EAST championship game, No. 7 seed Pittsburgh surprised top-seeded Georgetown 74-65. As the seventh seed, Pitt had to win four games to take the crown.
The Panthers were led by forward Sam Young, who won the David Gavitt Trophy, and Bronx schoolboy star Levance Fields, who made the All-Tournament Team.
The road to the title began with a 70-64 first-round win over No. 10 Cincinnati. Then, the Panthers beat Louisville 76-69 in overtime in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals Pittsburgh toppled No. 6 seed Marquette 68-61. The Hoyas had cruised to the final with 19- and 17-point victories, respectively, over Villanova and West Virginia.
All-Tournament Team members also included Roy Hibbert and Jessie Sapp of Georgetown, Jerel McNeal of Marquette and Joe Alexander of West Virginia.
