From The BIG EAST Vault: Villanova Defeats UConn In The 1983 BIG EAST Tournament

March 22, 2014

As Villanova prepares for its Round of 32 matchup, a familiar foe awaits them in Buffalo, N.Y. After defeating UW-Milwaukee 73-53, the Wildcats earned a matchup with former rival, the University of Connecticut. It's a series filled with rich history, as the two teams have met 63 times with Villanova holding a 33-30 edge in the series.

None may have been more competitive than a quarterfinal battle in the 1983 BIG EAST Tournament, the first-ever at Madison Square Garden. The game featured future NCAA Champions for Villanova Ed Pinckney, Dwayne McClain, Harold Pressley, Gary McLain and legendary coach Rollie Massimino. After controlling much of the game, Villanova held off a late UConn rally to defeat the Huskies 69-68 and advance to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals.

When these two teams meet in 2014, another trip to Madison Square Garden is on the line as the winner books a ticket to the Eastern Regional held at the World's Most Famous Arena. The rematch tips at 9:40 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 on TBS.
