Dan Gavitt Named NCAA Vice President of Men's Basketball Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The NCAA announced that Dan Gavitt, Associate Commissioner of The BIG EAST Conference, has been named NCAA Vice President of Men's Basketball Championships. In his new role, Gavitt will set the strategic direction for and oversee the operation and management of the Division I, II and III men's basketball championships.

At the BIG EAST, Gavitt oversaw all men's basketball administration, including The BIG EAST Championship at Madison Square Garden in New York. He was hired by former BIG EAST Commissioner Michael Tranghese in 2005.

"This is an outstanding opportunity for Dan," said Tranghese. "The NCAA has made a terrific choice. It is a perfect role for Dan. He is an outstanding administrator who has the respect of administrators, coaches and officials in the world of college basketball."

"I'm thrilled for Dan and his family," said Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey. "A well-deserved challenge for him. While it is a loss for the BIG EAST because he absolutely knew how to communicate with coaches, it is a big win for college basketball overall with the expertise he will bring to the position."
