- Highlights of Pittsburgh's 83-75 win over Rhode Island
The 2010-11 college basketball season is underway, and a BIG EAST team already has a quality win in the bank following Pittsburgh's 83-75 decision against Rhode Island Monday at the Petersen Events Center.
Pitt, the preseason favorite in the BIG EAST, got 24 points from guard Brad Wanamaker and 22 from guard Ashton Gibbs to hold off the Rams, who won 26 games and reached the NIT semifinals last year.
Pittsburgh withstood the Rams' effective 3-point shooting to take a one-point lead at halftime. Rhode Island led by as many as eight in the second half, but the Panthers took the lead for good with 11:46 left, improving to 76-1 alltime against nonconference opponents at the Petersen Events Center.
Pittsburgh hosts Illinois-Chicago Wednesday in the second round of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.
