PROVIDENCE, R.I. - DePaul senior guard Sammy Mejia and Seton Hall freshman guard Eugene Harvey received BIG EAST Conference men's basketball weekly honors on Monday, Dec. 4. Mejia was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, while Harvey received Rookie of the Week accolades.
Mejia was the difference down the stretch, scoring eight straight points in DePaul's 64-57 upset win over No. 5 Kansas on Dec. 2. The senior from the Bronx, N.Y. tied the game, 53-53, on a 3-pointer with 3:02 left. He followed that with a 3-point basket and a layup, which gave DePaul a 58-53 advantage. Mejia finished with game highs of 23 points and eight rebounds. It was DePaul's only game of the week.
Harvey averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.0 steals in a 2-0 week for the Pirates. In Seton Hall's 93-82 overtime win over St. Mary's on Dec. 2, Harvey scored seven of his 18 points in overtime to seal the win. For the game, he posted seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, to go along with his 18 points. Earlier in the week, the freshman guard had 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals in a win over St. Peter's.
