BIG EAST teams went 4-1 Tuesday, highlighted by a thrilling 79-77 win by Marquette against Washington in the late game of the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
Forward Jae Crowder hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 6.3 seconds to play as the Golden Eagles beat Washington 79-77 and improved to 8-0 on the season. Guard Darius Johnson-Odem had 23 points to lead the Golden Eagles in an up-and-down game that included 15 lead changes and four ties over the final 12 minutes. Marquette returns to action on Dec. 10 at 9 p.m. when it takes on Green Bay.
Guard Dion Waiters had 15 points and forward Kris Joseph had 11 points and eight rebounds as unbeaten Syracuse continues to win, this time outlasting Marshall, 62-56, at the Carrier Dome behind a solid defensive effort. The Orange, who improved to 9-0 on the season, had 12 steals and forced 19 Marshall turnovers. Syracuse plays the last of four straight home games on Dec. 10 against George Washington at 7 p.m.
Pittsburgh notched its sixth-straight win as the Panthers cruised past VMI 97-70. Guard Ashton Gibbs scored 20 points as Pitt set a school record with 60 rebounds in a game. Forward Nasir Robinson led the way with 19 points and 14 rebounds, six Panthers had at least five boards. The Panthers face Oklahoma State in the MSG Holiday Classic on Dec. 10 at 2:30 p.m.
Forward Herb Pope scored 25 points, leading Seton Hall to a 78-48 victory over NJIT. The victory was the fourth straight for the Pirates who are in the middle of a span where they play six straight home games. Guard Aaron Crosby added 12 points while forward Patick Auda and guard Jordan Theodore scored 11 each for the Pirates. Theodore also had a career-high 11 assists. The Pirates host Wake Forest Dec. 10 at 8 p.m.
Villanova fell to Missouri 81-71 in the early game of the Jimmy V Classic. Guard Maalik Wayns had 14 points while guard Darrun Hilliard added 13 for the Wildcats. The Wildcats used a 10-0 run capped by guard Dominic Cheek's 3 pointer to get within 61-55 with 9:52 left. They got as close as six once more, 68-62 on a rebound basket by guard JayVaughn Pinkston with 6:01 to play, but Missouri went on a 7-1 run to secure its lead. Villanova visits Temple on Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
Wednesday's BIG EAST schedule lists three games. Rutgers and Princeton meet for the 118th
time at 7 p.m. at the RAC. DePaul takes to the road, to face Loyola (Ill.) in the 55th
meeting between the two Chicago-based schools. The game will tip at 8 p.m. Louisville will host IUPUI at 7 p.m. It is only the second meeting between the two programs.
