MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP - DEC. 24

BIG EAST teams went 4-2 on Friday.

Louisville extended its winning streak to 12 games with a 70-60 victory over Western Kentucky. Trailing by eight points with 12 minutes remaining, the Cardinals reeled off 14 straight points, half from guard Russ Smith. He finished the game with 23 points. His 3-pointer from the left corner off an inbounds pass gave Louisville the lead for good at 52-50 with 6:53 remaining. Forward Gorgui Dieng registered 13 points and 15 rebounds for his fifth-straight double-double. On Dec. 28 Louisville hosts Georgetown at 7 p.m.

Seton Hall extended its winning streak to eight games with an 87-61 victory at Longwood. Guard Jordan Theodore scored a career-high 26 points as the Pirates overcame an early double-digit deficit. Guard Fauquan Edwin tied his career-high with 20 points on 9-of-12-shooting. Seton Hall travels to face Syracuse on Dec. 28.

Providence has a seven game winning streak after an 80-61 victory over intrastate rival Rhode Island. Guard Bryce Cotton scored 16 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. The victory is Providence's third true road win of the season. It is the first time the Friars have earned three road non-conference victories over Division I teams since the BIG EAST was founded in 1979-80.

Guard Sean Kilpatrick scored 21 points to lead six Cincinnati players in double figures as the Bearcats won their fourth-consecutive game 95-60 over Chicago State. Cincinnati, which scored 101 points in each of its two previous games, fell short of becoming the first team in school history to score at least 100 in three consecutive games. The Bearcats set season highs with 16 3-pointers and 35 attempts.

West Virginia lost to No. 6/7 Baylor 83-81 in overtime in the Las Vegas Classic Championship game. Forward Kevin Jones had 28 points and 17 rebounds for the Mountaineers while guard Jabarie Hinds had 18 points and seven assists. Guard Darryl Bryant had 16 points. Jones leads the BIG EAST in points and rebounds with 21.0 and 11.9 averages, respectively. West Virginia opens BIG EAST play when it hosts Villanova at 7 p.m. on Dec. 28.

Guard Ashton Giggs scored 14 points as Pittsburgh lost at home to Wagner 59-54. Forward Nasir Robinson posted nine points and nine rebounds for the Panthers.

Following the Christmas break, the BIG EAST schedule resumes Dec. 27 with a pair of conference games. Pittsburgh will visit Notre Dame, while Providence heads to St. John's.
