ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Marquette traveled to Michigan for its first two exhibition games of the 2013 men's lacrosse season Saturday. MU fell to the Wolverines 14-6 in the opening contest before defeating Denison 5-3 at Oosterbaan Field House.
Marquette freshman Kyle Whitlow provided half of the team's offense in the first game, registering three of MU's six goals.
The Coldwater, Ontario, native put the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard first, but it was Marquette's only lead of the game, as Michigan proceeded to tally five unanswered, including two quick goals to start the second quarter, to grab a 5-1 lead.
MU closed the gap to 6-3 just before halftime on a goal by fellow Canadian Tyler Melnyk, who finished with two goals and an assist, but the Wolverines slowly widened the margin in the second half.
Freshman goalie JJ Sagl had 11 saves for the Golden Eagles, while Michigan's Gerald Logan made 16 stops, including some keys saves in the final 20 minutes of play that allowed the momentum to stay in the favor of U-M.
There were five different goal-scorers for the Golden Eagles in game two: Brendan Smith, Paul Riportella, Phil McFarland, Henry Nelson and Ryan Buckley. Matt Barone played the entire game between the pipes.
Denison and Marquette only played three quarters. MU trailed 2-1 early in the second quarter before rattling off three straight goals.
Statistics were not kept for the Denison scrimmage.
MU wraps up preseason competition at Hofstra next weekend. Amplo and the Golden Eagles play a pair of exhibition games on Saturday, Feb. 9, taking on the host Pride followed by a scrimmage against Penn.
