A couple of big offensive performances propelled a pair of BIG EAST men's lacrosse teams to season-opening victories on Saturday.
Junior Wes Berg poured in five goals, Jack Bobzien tallied four goals and six points and Jeremy Noble dished four assists in No. 4/4 Denver's 14-8 win at Air Force. Jamie Faus logged eight stops in the first three quarters to pick up the win before Ryan LaPlante relieved him for the fourth. Six different Pioneer players found the back of the net.
Scott Klimchak dented the twine five times and Kris Alleyne made 12 saves in goal as Rutgers won its opener by a 13-5 score over visiting Manhattan. Joe Nardella was nearly perfect at the X, winning 18 of 20 faceoffs. Manhattan scored the game's first two goals before the Scarlet Knights rattled off eight straight to take an 8-2 halftime lead and never looked back.
Five different players scored for Marquette, but the Golden Eagles were downed 13-6 at No. 17/19 Lehigh. Marquette trailed 3-2 after the first quarter, but Lehigh scored nine of the game's next 11 goals to take a 12-4 lead after three. Tyler Melnyk tallied a pair of goals and Conor Gately had two assists and three points.
Georgetown opens its season on Tuesday when it welcomes Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m. St. John's and Villanova open play next weekend, and Providence the weekend after.
