The Providence College men's lacrosse team is set to take on Yale on Tuesday, April 2 in New Haven, Conn. at 7:00 p.m. The Friars enter Tuesday's game with an overall record of 7-3 (1-2 BIG EAST).
Providence is coming off of an exciting week where it recorded two come-from-behind wins on the road. On Tuesday, March 26 the Friars battled back from a 7-2 deficit to top Bryant, 10-9. The Friars continued their success after defeating Rutgers in overtime, 10-9, to notch Providence's first BIG EAST win of the season.
For their performance last week, sophomore Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman goalie Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) were named to the BIG EAST men's lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll. FitzMaurice notched the game equalizer against both Bryant and Rutgers in addition to scoring the game-winner versus Rutgers with 54 seconds remaining in overtime. Connelly played 120 minutes in goal for the Friars last week and recorded 21 saves total on the week.
Junior attack Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) leads the Friars in scoring with 35 points on 26 goals and nine assists. Fellow junior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) ranks second with 33 points on 19 goals and 14 assists.
Face-off specialist, junior Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.), is 109-of-210 at the face-off "X" and has averaged a win percentage above .500 on the season.
Connelly has continued his success in goal for the Friars, starting all 10 games that the Friars have competed in. He has logged 523:44 minutes in goal for Providence and has tallied 99 saves thus far. In addition, Connelly owns a .510 save percentage.
Providence and Yale last met on April 3, 2012 in Providence, R.I. where the Bulldogs defeated the Friars, 9-6. FitzMaurice led the Friars' effort last year with two goals.
SCOUTING YALE: Yale enters Tuesday's game with an overall record of 4-3 (1-1 IVY LEAGUE). Yale's lone conference win came over Penn (7-6) on Saturday, March 30. The Bulldogs are led on the offensive end by Brandon Mangan who has tallied a team-high 32 points on 19 goals and 13 assists. Three other Bulldogs have notched double figures in the scoring column including Conrad Oberbeck (19), Kirby Zdrill (16) and Colin Flaherty (11). Dylan Levings has been consistent for Yale, winning 97-of-158 face-off attempts. Defenseman Peter Johnson has caused a team-high 15 turnovers. Eric Natale has logged 418:49 minutes in goal for Yale and recorded 63 saves. Natale owns a .516 save percentage and holds an 8.47 goals against average.
