DENVER, Colo. - Zach Miller and Erik Adamson scored two goals apiece and Jack Bobzien dished three assists as fifth-seeded Denver (15-2) held off North Carolina (10-5) 9-5 Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Pioneers advance to play either No. 4 seed Penn or Drexel in next Sunday's NCAA Quarterfinals at Delaware Stadium in Newark, Del. Game time will be either noon or 2:30 p.m. Eastern.

Denver outscored UNC 4-0 over the last 16:19 of the first half to take a 5-1 lead into the break. Adamson scored both his goals during the run, while BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player Wesley Berg and Sean Cannizzaro also dented the twine. Bobzien assisted on the first two goals.

Two quick goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter brought the Tar Heels back within 5-3, but they never seriously threatened again. Much like he did in the BIG EAST Tournament final against Villanova, Miller scored back-to-back third quarter goals to reestablish momentum for Denver, and Jeremy Noble's unassisted tally early in the fourth gave the Pios an 8-3 lead.

Ryan LaPlante earned the start in goal and made three saves in the first half to earn the win.

Denver finished with a 38-28 advantage in shots and a 26-19 lead in ground balls.
