SYRACUSE WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL LEADS THE NATION IN BLOCKS PER SET
Cincinnati and Louisville will both be facing No. 3 Illinois and No. 14 Purdue in Champaign, Ill. over the weekend. Syracuse leads the nation in blocks per set through the first three weeks of competition, averaging 3.34 blocks per set. Villanova senior Kim Maroon is second in the nation with 6.75 digs per set. With the 3-0 victory over New Hampshire on Sep. 10, UConn head coach Holly Strauss-O'Brien recorded her 100th career victory.
GEORGETOWN WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RANKED No. 1 IN THE COUNTRY
The Georgetown women's cross country team is the top-ranked team in the country. The BIG EAST has three women's team in the top five including No. 1 Georgetown, No. 3 Providence and No. 5 Villanova. There are numerous men's cross country teams ranked in the top 25 including No. 14 Syracuse, No. 17 Providence, No. 18 Villanova, No. 19 Louisville, No. 22 Georgetown and No. 23 Notre Dame.
FIELD HOCKEY OPENS UP LEAGUE COMPETITION
Two BIG EAST field hockey teams remain ranked in the NFHCA Coaches' Poll with Connecticut and Syracuse holding their positions at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. The Huskies have compiled a 5-0 record and look to remain undefeated when they host No. 8 Boston College on Sept. 18. League play officially gets underway this weekend with three league games on the schedule.
MEN'S SOCCER DOMINATES NATIONAL POLLS
BIG EAST men's soccer has six teams listed in the NSCAA national rankings and seven teams in the Soccer America national rankings. In the NSCAA Northeast Region rankings, BIG EAST teams have seven of the top 10 teams. BIG EAST teams look to add to their six top 25 wins this weekend as on Friday, No. 17/12 USF hosts No. 5/10 UC Irvine and No. 14/14 St. John's hosts No. 9/7 Indiana. Providence, ranked 25th in the Soccer America poll, hosts No. 3/3 Creighton on Saturday and Syracuse will play No. 16/23 New Mexico in the Akron Tournament on Sunday.
WOMEN'S SOCCER BEGINS CONFERENCE PLAY
BIG EAST women's soccer began conference play on Thursday with all eight American Division team in action, while the eight National Division teams begin league play Friday night. All 16 teams play on Sunday, Sept. 18, including a clash between No. 8/9 Marquette and West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va. The Mountaineers (5-3-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) lead the all-time series 5-2, including a 3-0 mark at home. Marquette (8-1-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) sits at No. 8 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, its highest ranking ever.
