2010 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship Semifinals Set

With the conclusion of the quarterfinal round, the field has been set for the semifinals of the 2010 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship, presented by Travelodge. Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. will serve as host for the semifinals (Nov. 12) and the championship game (Nov. 14). All three of the matches in will be broadcast live on the CBS College Sports Network. In addition, the championship match will be produced by BIG EAST TV and will be available on numerous regional sports networks including SNY in the metro NY area. The champion receives the league's automatic bid to the 48-team NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. Red Division No. 2 seed Cincinnati will play Providence in the first semifinal at 5:00 p.m. ET, televised live on CBS C. The two did not meet in the regular season this year. Providence is 2-1-2 all-time against the Bearcats, with the last meeting coming in 2008 (a double-overtime scoreless draw in Providence). Cincinnati captured the second seed, earning a first-round bye. The Bearcats battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Connecticut on Monday night in the last of the quarterfinals. The Bearcats advanced on penalty kicks, 4-1, to make their first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals. The Friars, the fifth seed in the Blue Division, have pulled off two upsets to reach the semifinals, defeating Red Division No. 4 seed Villanova 3-0 before knocking off the top seed in the Blue Division, Georgetown, 2-1 in a quarterfinal match-up on Nov. 6. Providence has won six-straight games and is undefeated in its last seven contests. The Friars enter the semifinal with an 11-5-2 overall record. Louisville will face Notre Dame in the second semifinal match-up, which will be aired live on CBS C at 7:30 p.m. ET. The two teams did not meet during the regular season, but the Irish hold a 9-1-1 edge in the all-time series. The two teams last met on Nov. 13 2009 in the BIG EAST Championship semifinal with the game ending in a tie and Notre Dame advancing on penalty kicks, 4-3. Louisville took the regular season title in the Red Division, earning a bye to the quarterfinal round, where the Cardinals defeated West Virginia 2-0 on Nov. 6. The Cardinals are undefeated this season, holding a 15-0-2 overall record, including a perfect 9-0-0 mark in league action. Notre Dame, the second seed in the Blue Division, earned a first-round bye and defeated Marquette 2-1 on Nov. 6 at home. This trip to the championship marks Notre Dame's 14th appearance. The 2010 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship, Presented By Travelodge, featured the top 12 of the league's 16 teams. Selection and seeding were based on regular season conference records as the top six teams in each division, seeded by conference point total, qualified for the league championship. The top two teams in each division earn first-round byes to the quarterfinals. The first-round and quarterfinal games were held on the campuses of the higher seeded teams.
