The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 2/3 Notre Dame, 89-44, on Saturday, January 26 in Notre Dame, Ind. The Friars fall to 6-13 on the season (1-5 BIG EAST), while Notre Dame improves to 18-1 (7-0 BIG EAST).
Skylar Diggins put the Irish on her back in the first half, scoring 21 points on 9-9 shooting from the field to give Notre Dame a 46-15 lead at halftime. Danielle Pearson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Friars with seven points in the opening 20 minutes. In addition to shooting 52.5-percent (21-40) from the floor as a team, Notre Dame also held a commanding lead on the boards (29-13). Providence was limited to two offensive rebounds in the first half.
Friar sophomore Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored each of her team-high 12 points in the second half. She also added five rebounds, two assists and one steal in the game. Fellow sophomore Alexis Harris (Detroit, Mich.) contributed eight points and five rebounds, while senior Brianna Edwards (Minneapolis, Minn.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland) dished a career-high four assists for Providence.
Diggins finished the afternoon with a game-high 21 points, while Natalie Achonwa added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jewell Loyd chipped in 10 points.
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, January 30 against St. John's. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
