CHICAGO, Ill. – Freshman Faith Woodard and sophomore Logan Battle each scored 13 points as eighth-seeded Georgetown pulled away in the second half in a 56-37 BIGE AST Tournament victory over No. 9 seed Xavier on Saturday.
The Hoyas (11-20) used a 21-3 run over the first 12 minutes 56 seconds of the second half to take command after leading 31-26 at halftime in the opening round game at DePaul’s McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Georgetown center Andrea Butler, the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, closed with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Forward Briana Glover and guard Aliyah Zantt each had had a team-high eight points for Xavier (8-23). The Musketeers have now lost 13 straight since beating Providence 75-52 on Jan. 18.
The Hoyas meet the host Blue Demons, the No. 1 seed and regular-season BIG EAST champ, at 6 p.m. Sunday as tournament play shifts to Allstate Arena in suburban Rosemont, Ill.
Georgetown broke a 24-24 tie late in the first half as Butler scored four points inside the paint and guard Jade Martin added a 3-pointer over a span of 1:16 on the way to a 31-26 halftime lead.
Butler led all first half scorers with nine points while Woodard added eight. Three Xavier players had six points.
The Hoyas opened the second half with eight unanswered points through the first 6:19 for a 39-26 lead, their largest to that point. Glover ended the drought with a layup at the 12:18 mark.
Georgetown led 52-29 with 7:04 to play after Battle’s 3-point field goal, her third of the game.
The teams split their regular season meetings with Xavier winning 85-68 at home on Jan. 8 while Georgetown claimed a 66-58 decision on Feb. 8 at home. The teams now each have two wins in the all-time series.
