St. John’s Quotes and Notes vs. Seton Hall
Coach Joe Tartamella – Opening Statement
“What a game. What a great basketball game and atmosphere. It’s what tournaments are all about and what the postseason is all about. I’m so proud of our ladies and how we were able to come back from some difficult spots in the game. Even going into the half, I was very happy with what we were doing. I thought we were defending well and our energy level was what we had been doing all year. And I thought we got the spark we needed in the second half.”

“I was just really happy to be able to come out with an effort like that, especially playing the day before. This is what we have been building for all year. Creighton is a tremendous program and coach [Jim] Flanery is someone I have so much respect for, and those kids played as hard as anything. But what a great game and atmosphere, especially for the first time coming out here in Chicago.”

On being down late in the game…
“We talked about a sense of urgency and the house being on fire a little bit. We got better opportunities to score because we were continuing to stay aggressive to the rim. I credit our players for being able to stay the course. And as much as we had some dry spells offensively, we defended – we got stops over and over. That’s what allowed us to stay in the game.”

On being able to limit BIG EAST Player of the Year Marissa Janning…
“She’s an unbelievable player, there’s a reason she was BIG EAST Player of the Year. You do what you can to limit some of the things she likes to do. You can test her the best you can, but you defend her as a team. There’s no one person that’s going to be able to limit her and that’s something we stressed going into the game and we stressed all year is team defense. I think we did a great job making her take shots in tough spots and I thought we kept her off-balance throughout the game. She’s going to score, she’s a great player. But I thought we did a great job funneling her to certain spots throughout the game. And we put multiple people on her too, she runs you all over the floor. She has a motor like no one I’ve seen in a long time.”

Creighton Quotes and Notes
Coach Jim Flanery
Opening Statement
“Obviously it was a heck of a game and I just told our team that it could have gone either. There were fifty plays at the end that could have let us win, and there were fifty plays that could have let St. John’s win. Someone had to lose and to [Danaejah] Grant’s credit, she’s 2-for-9 from the line and steps up there with five seconds left and makes two – I don’t think they touched the rim – and that’s tough to do.”

“When you’re so familiar with each other, these games tend to be grind-it-out games and this was no exception. They were very good defensively and we had stretches when we were pretty good, but couldn’t get some key shots to go in and neither team was very good from the free throw line, which opened up doors for the other team. I felt like we missed too many, but then I look at them and they missed more.”

“That was the gameplan. We wanted to make them guard. We’re not going to be athletic enough to beat them off the dribble or make a play off one or two passes. Our goal was to make four-to-seven passes and then execute a screen that gets a shot or put the ball on the floor or get a post-up. For the most part, we did pretty well in that regard. We don’t play that way against everybody, but against these guys – their defense is so good.”

Senior Sarah Nelson
On coming up just short…
“It’s heartbreaking, I don’t know what else to say. It’s heartbreaking because I think we had the game at the end of both regulation and overtime, and we missed free throws. I missed one and we really could have iced it because they really aren’t that great of a three-point shooting team and I think that would have finished it off. It’s heartbreaking when you think about how they banked in a half-court shot at halftime. There’s just so many things that could have gone one way or the other, like Flan [coach Jim Flanery] said, and I don’t know what else to say other than it’s not fun.”
