NEW YORK, N.Y. – BIG EAST women's basketball standings officially took shape as we rang in the New Year on Wednesday. All 10 teams have now played conference games following Wednesday's three-game set, with league newcomer Creighton moving to the top of the standings.
The Bluejays became the first 2-0 team in league play following a narrow 65-63 overtime win at Georgetown. The squads were all square after both halftime (26-26) and regulation (57-57), but CU earned an 8-6 advantage the extra period, including a decisive three-pointer by the BIG EAST's No. 5 scorer Marissa Janning. GU's freshman standout Natalie Butler notched a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds.
In another tightly contested tilt, Butler edged Providence 68-65 in the Friars' BIG EAST opener. PC ended the game on a 15-2 run, holding the Bulldogs without a field goal for the final 5:54, but Butler's once 16-point lead proved to be too much to overcome. PC's Karin Robinson scored a career-high 23, while Butler's Daress McClung racked up a double-double of 12 points, 10 boards.
In the BIG EAST opener for both squads, DePaul ran away from Xavier with an 87-60 win in Chicago, Ill. The league's reigning player of the week Jasmine Penny remained hot, scoring a game-high 27 points on 11-14 shooting. Penny has shot 85.7 percent her past two games, moving from 15th (13.5) to sixth (15.7) in scoring average on the conference ledger.
