There was just one BIG EAST women's basketball game on the schedule on Monday night. Rutgers beat George Washington 60-50 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
The Scarlet Knights (8-6) were led by junior guard April Sykes who tallied 20 points and a career-high six steal. Sophomore center Monique Oliver poured in 15 points and five boards, while junior forward Chelsey Lee also tallied double figure points with 11.
George Washington (5-9) was paced by Sarah Mostafa who tallied a game-high 23 points.
The first half saw George Washington jump out to an early 24-15 lead behind strong play from Mostafa who scored the Colonial's first 14 points. Rutgers responded by scoring the next 13 points to take a 28-24 lead. The run was aided by strong defense and the play of Sykes, who had eight of her 11 first half points during the spurt. The double-digit scoring performance extended Sykes' streak of consecutive double figures games to 11.
Mostafa recorded an old fashioned three point play as time expired to send the squads to the locker room with Rutgers leading 28-27.
The teams played evenly to begin the second with RU holding a narrow 36-34 lead before Oliver took over running off the next nine points for the Scarlet Knights pushing their lead to double-figures at 45-34. From there, Rutgers was able to maintain its momentum using solid defense and timely offense to claim the victory.
RU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 8, when they welcome BIG EAST rival Villanova to the RAC for a 1 p.m. matchup.
