NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior McKenzie Fujan scored more points than any BIG EAST player since early March 2013 to lead Creighton past DePaul, 86-78, on Saturday. The tilt was televised to a national audience from Omaha, Neb., on FOX Sports 1, highlighting a five-game conference weekend.
Fujan came close to last season’s high mark of 42 set by Georgetown’s Sugar Rodgers on March 9, 2013, making 13-of-17 attempts from the floor. The Bluejays improved to 3-0 in BIG EAST play to sit atop the conference standings, winners of five of their last six. Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Jasmine Penny of DePaul kept her scoring streak going, tallying 26 points.
Villanova, Butler and Marquette all collected wins on Saturday to lock up second place in the BIG EAST standings. The Golden Eagles forced Georgetown into its third consecutive overtime contest, edging the Hoyas 82-80 in Washington, D.C. MU’s Katherine Plouffe scored 33 points to hang on to her crown as the active career scoring leader (1,247) among league foes.
Other notable performances include Butler’s Daress McClung, who tallied 24 points in the Bulldogs’ six-point win at Seton Hall, and Villanova’s Devon Kane who scored 17 points and was credited with seven assists in the Wildcats’ nine-point win over PC. Xavier’s Shatyra Hawkes made 6-of-8 shots en route to scoring 20 points in the Musketeers’ Sunday afternoon victory over St. John’s.
