Moore and Schimmel Earn Weekly Honors

Connecticut senior Maya Moore earned BIG EAST women's basketball Player of the Week honors, while Louisville rookie Schoni Schimmel was tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Moore averaged 23.5 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game and dished out eight assists in Connecticut's 2-0 week. She started the week with a 16-point, nine-rebound effort in the Huskies' 81-35 win over Villanova on Jan. 4, making 8-of-14 from the floor in only 26 minutes. She followed that with a 31-point, eight-rebound performance in UConn's nationally-televised 79-76 win at No. 13/12 Notre Dame on Saturday. Moore buried a shot late in the game to give the Huskies a lead and also went a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line against the Irish. She shot over 50 percent for the week and added two blocks and three steals. Moore has scored at least 30 points 10 times in her career and she also became the 45th player in NCAA Division I history to score 2,500 career points. Schimmel finished averaged 13 points and nine assists per game, helping the Cardinals to a 2-0 week. She recorder her second straight double-double with 11 points and 11 assists against No. 18/18 St. John's, adding four steals and two rebounds. Against Pittsburgh she had 13 points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals. She connected on 88.3 percent from the foul line. Schimmel's seven assists in the game give her 30 in the last three contests, the highest three-game total for a Louisville player since 2001. BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll: Sugar Rodgers, Georgetown, So., G (Suffolk, Va.) Averaged 25 ppg and 10 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Hoyas. Shot 48 percent from the field, recording her second and third double-doubles of the season. Monique Reid, Louisville, Jr., F (Louisville, Ky.) Averaged 26.5 ppg game in a 2-0 week, with 24 points against No. 18/18 St. John's and 29 points against Pittsburgh. She shot 66.7 percent from the field and added six steals. Devereaux Peters, Notre Dame, Sr., F (Chicago, Ill.) Averaged 17.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for Notre Dame, with a win at Marquette and loss to No. 2/2 UConn. Shot 56 percent from the field and 87 percent from the line, adding six blocks and four steals. Elashier Hall, Syracuse, So., G (Greenbelt, Md.) Netted 16 points in both games for Syracuse last week, adding 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Shot 50 percent from the floor. Liz Repella, West Virginia, Sr., G (Steubenville, Ohio) Averaged 17.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg, shooting 58 percent from the field as the Mountaineers remain undefeated on a 16-game winning streak. Shot 10-of-16 for 24 points with four 3-pointers at Seton Hall.
