WBB Minute: Xavier-Butler on FOX Sports 2

Jan. 31, 2014

What We’re Watching
Xavier and Butler will be the FOX Sports Game of the Week as the two squads will go head-to-head in Cincinnati on Saturday at 5 p.m. The game will be televised on FOX Sports 2. Both teams will be making their FOX Sports debuts, with all other eight league teams already thrust onto the national stage via FOX previously this season.

Significant Streaks
St. John's and DePaul maintained their hot streaks on Wednesday night as both claimed home-court victories. The Red Storm defeated Xavier for their BIG EAST-leading seventh win in a row, their longest string of consecutive wins since 2011-12. DePaul knocked off Marquette for the Blue Demons' fifth consecutive 'W'. DePaul's success streak is one shy of its season high and its longest in BIG EAST play since 2010-11.

Notable Matchups
St. John’s will make the short trip west to face Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon in defense of its seven-game winning streak. The two squads met already once this season, with the Red Storm earning a nine-point win in Queens on Dec. 28, led Brianna Brown’s season-high 20 points. DePaul and Providence will also meet for the second time this season. Three of the conference’s top-four passers will take the court as DePaul’s Chanise Jenkins and Brittany Hrynko will face off against the Friars’ Sarah Beal. Jenkins lists second in conference play with 5.7 assists per game, followed by Hrynko in third (5.3) and Beal in fourth (5.2). Beal was one assist shy of tying the BIG EAST rookie record on Tuesday with her 13 dimes at Butler, the most by any league player this season.

Defensive Throwdown
The two stingiest defenses in the BIG EAST will battle on Saturday afternoon when Villanova hosts Creighton. The Wildcats have allowed just one opponent over the past five games to score more than 60 points, while 13 have been limited to 59 or under all season. The Bluejays’ last four wins were by an average of 20.8 points per game, despite Seton Hall taking them to the wire (76-73) on Wednesday.

Milestone Markers
Five players in the BIG EAST this season have 1,000 or more career points with Eugeneia McPherson of St. John’s knocking on the door to become No. 6. McPherson enters Saturday’s game with 993 points over her four-year playing career, and has averaged 12 points per game over the past two games. Butler’s Daress McClung and Georgetown’s Andrea White both eclipsed the 500-career rebound mark last week, as McClung enters the weekend with 501 boards and White boasts 500 caroms. Marquette’s Katherine Plouffe is the active career scoring and rebounding leader in the BIG EAST, showing 1,330 career points and 833 career rebounds.
