Junior guard Shoni Schimmel was named BIG EAST Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday, Feb. 4. This is Schimmel's fifth career BIG EAST weekly honor, she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for times in 2010-11.
Schimmel led the Cardinals to a 2-0 week in league play, averaging 26.5 points and 5.0 assists per game. In the Cardinals' 78-75 win at USF, Schimmel scored a career-high 38 points and tied the school record with eight made 3-pointers. Schimmel also finished the game with three assists, two blocks and one steal. She was 8 of 14 from behind the arc and 6 of 7 from the foul line.
Against Georgetown Schimmel finished with 15 points and seven assists. She also pulled down four rebounds and had two steals. Schimmel finished the week hitting 43.6 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from behind the arc. She also shot 80 percent from the foul line while finishing the week with a 1.4 assist to turnover ratio.
