National Poll Update
Riding respective winning streaks of eight and six games, St. John’s and DePaul received votes in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Polls this week. Announced on Monday, the Red Storm collected 28 points in the AP Poll, while the Blue Demons tallied four points. On Tuesday, the USA Today Poll revealed both St. John’s and DePaul with 15 points apiece.
Revealing The RPI
The NCAA announced its fifth RPI of the season on Monday with six BIG EAST teams making moves up the chart. DePaul had the largest leap of the week, climbing from 46th to 35th following another 2-0 stretch. St. John’s also continued its ascent up the poll, leading all BIG EAST teams with its No. 12 ranking. Creighton also enjoyed a double-digit increase, improving from 68th to 55th. Villanova (34th) and Marquette (94th) also advanced.
St. John’s is the highest team in the NCAA RPI that is not in either top-25 poll. The Red Storm are receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls and are No. 12 in the RPI. Five teams in the top 25 of the NCAA RPI are not ranked in the latest AP top 25, with four of the five receiving votes, including the top vote-getter among the group, St. John’s (28).
DePaul is one of just eight teams in Division I averaging greater than 84 points per game. The Blue Demons enter the week scoring 84.5 points per contest to rank sixth in the nation, having eclipsed the 90-point mark eight times this season. Four DePaul players are averaging in double figures, including Jasmine Penny at 16.0 points per game.
Villanova leads all Division I teams by averaging just 9.0 turnovers per game, while Wildcat sophomore Caroline Coyer is the national leader in assist/turnover ratio at 3.68. Villanova also lists No. 2 nationally in ATO ratio (1.85).
