WBB Minute: St. John's Halts Villanova's Streak

Feb. 16, 2014

Home Court Advantage
All five home teams earned wins on Saturday afternoon: St. John’s, Marquette, Butler, Creighton and DePaul all successfully defended their home courts. The Red Storm and Bluejays remained undefeated at home in BIG EAST play, while St. John’s, DePaul and Creighton are a combined 19-1 against conference foes this season in games played on their own campuses.

Breast Cancer Awareness
The Red Storm wore pink and white uniforms along with pink shoes, while raising money for Friends of Crush Cancer Fund for Clare on Saturday. Clare Droesch is a former video coordinator for the St. John’s program who was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2011, which quickly spread to her spine and sacrum. The fans at Carnesecca Arena donated $3,000 to the charity on Saturday afternoon.

On A Roll
St. John’s has won 11 straight BIG EAST games following its victory on Saturday over Villanova. The 11-game streak in league play is a program best. Also riding a hot streak, DePaul has claimed nine consecutive BIG EAST victories, its longest in program history in league play. Marquette also has a multiple-game winning streak, coming off back-to-back victories and are winners of four of their last five.

Double-Double Report
Georgetown freshman center Natalie Butler recorded her 20th double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds against Butler on Saturday. Butler is the first BIG EAST player to reach 20 double-doubles since DePaul’s Khara Smith, who registered 23 over 34 games in the 2005-06 season. Smith needed 31 games to reach the 20 double-double mark, tallying double-doubles in her four final games with the Blue Demons. GU’s Butler has played in 26 games this season and is averaging 14.7 points and a league-high 13.1 rebounds.

Another Notable 20-Mark
In addition to Natalie Butler’s 20th double-double of the season, another notable ‘20’ was achieved on Saturday: DePaul collected its 20th win of the season. The Blue Demons (20-5) defeated Seton Hall, 89-73, to reach the 20-win mark for the seventh consecutive season and 22nd time in program history. St. John’s (19-5) and Villanova (19-6) also have their sights set on win No. 20.
