WBB Minute: Tuesday Night Upsets

Feb. 19, 2014

Parity At Its Finest
Tuesday night proved that no game is a guaranteed win for any team in the conference as the top-two teams in the BIG EAST, which were riding historical winning streaks, were defeated on the road, while the No. 3 squad was taken to the wire. Georgetown, ninth in the league standings, earned the upset win over conference leader and No. 22 nationally St. John’s, 60-57. Marquette won its third straight by edging DePaul 80-74, which is second in the BIG EAST standings. Creighton needed all 40 minutes to escape Xavier with a 70-61 win. Wrapping up the Tuesday night battles, Seton Hall held on for an 82-72 win over the visiting Friars from Providence.

Upset Win For Georgetown
The Hoyas recorded their first win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 11, 2012, when Georgetown stunned No. 22/RV St. John’s, 60-57, on Tuesday night. The Red Storm headed to Washington, D.C., on an 11-game winning streak and held the lead until 15 minutes left in the second half. Logan Battle and Faith Woodard scored eight second-half points apiece for the Hoyas, while Samisha Powell finished with a team-high 13 points.

Marquette Making Noise
The Golden Eagles won for the fifth time in six games with their 80-74 victory over DePaul, which traveled to Milwaukee carrying a nine-game winning streak. Marquette entered Tuesday’s tilt with a 2-4 record against teams in the top 50 of the NCAA RPI, with the Blue Demons ranked 36th as of Monday’s release. MU registered a 55-point second half to spur the upset of DePaul, which received votes in both polls this week. Arlesia Morse scored a team-high 17 points, while DePaul’s Jasmine Penny was credited with a game-high 20 points.

Creighton, Seton Hall Use Late Runs
The Pirates closed the game on a 24-14 run to make the difference in an 82-72 home win over Providence on Tuesday night, while the Bluejays finished with a 12-1 spurt over the final five minutes to clinch the 70-61 win at Xavier. Sammy Jensen delivered a career-high 17 points for Creighton, while Ka-Deidre Simmons led three Pirates in double figures with 18 points.
