WBB Minute: DePaul Capitalizes on St. John's Slip

Feb. 27, 2014

View From The Top
The Blue Demons were probably the biggest Marquette fans in the nation on Wednesday night, as thanks to the Golden Eagles’ 74-61 win at St. John’s, DePaul is all alone in first place in the BIG EAST standings. The Blue Demons are 13-3, giving them a one-game lead over the Red Storm and Creighton, who land in a tie for second at 12-4.

No Lead Is Safe
Down 23 in the first, Marquette used a 23-7 run to close the first half to trail St. John’s at the break, 42-35. The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game with just 4:58 remaining the contest, a time which marked the start of a 14-2 run to close the game and earn the 13-point win at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm entered the game undefeated at home in conference play this season, and had edged MU by two in Milwaukee in their first meeting.

On The Line
Two regular-season games are remaining for all BIG EAST teams, with all 10 teams in action on Saturday afternoon. DePaul has an opportunity to clinch the regular-season title on Saturday with a win and a little help. The Blue Demons would need Marquette to defeat Creighton in order to claim the title outright following a win over the Red Storm. Even if DePaul loses its final two games, it can finish no lower than third in the BIG EAST standings. Additionally, if Butler knocks off Seton Hall, the Pirates will lock up the No. 7 seed and play in the First Round of the BIG EAST Tournament, while the Bulldogs would earn a first-round bye and be either No. 5 or 6 in the championship, depending on Villanova and Marquette outcomes. Georgetown, Xavier and Providence are all locked into First-Round games, with the final spot coming down to Butler or Seton Hall.

Watch The Drama Unfold
Two of Saturday’s key matchups will be aired to a national television audience, beginning with the DePaul-St. John’s tilt on FOX Sports 2 at 1 p.m., followed by the Creighton-Marquette dual at 3 p.m. on FOX Sports 1. The Red Storm earned a 10-point win over the Blue Demons in the first game of the series this season but have lost three straight, while DePaul has won 11 of its last 12 contests. The Bluejays defeated the Golden Eagles by 19 in the first showdown, but MU has become one of the most dangerous teams in the conference of late, collecting wins over DePaul and St. John’s over the past 10 days.
