Updated BIG EAST Notes


The BIG EAST women's basketball regular season is down to the final two days of league play before tournament. On Saturday, 14 teams are in action, including No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Connecticut. Both the Irish and Huskies have clinched byes to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship. Louisville, Syracuse, St. John's, DePaul and USF have clinched a bye to the Second Round.


Championship Central


The Irish head to Providence in the BIG EAST Television Network Game of the Week. It will be broadcast live on numerous regional sports networks including SNY and streamed live online for free at 4 p.m. UConn heads to USF in a game televised on SNY at Noon. Other action has DePaul at Pittsburgh, Villanova at Syracuse and Marquette at Georgetown. In the evening, Rutgers heads to Cincinnati, while Seton Hall hosts St. John's.


In action on Wednesday, St. John's (16-10, 10-4 BIG EAST) extended its red-hot play with a 52-49 win at Villanova. The Red Storm have won six in a row and not lost since a six-point defeat to then-No. 3/2 UConn (71-65) on Feb. 2. The Red Storm have had six losses decided by six points or less this season.


There were nine ties and six lead changes in the contest. Villanova head coach Harry Perretta missed the game due to a family emergency. Associate Head Coach Joe Mullaney coached the Wildcats in Perretta's absence. The Wildcats moved to 18-9 on the year, 7-7 BIG EAST play.


Elsewhere, No. 16/14 Louisville (23-6, 11-4 BIG EAST) held off Seton Hall 72-62. Louisville led by as many as 13 points in the second half but Seton Hall held the Cardinals without a field goal for the final 6:57 of the game. The Pirates cut the lead to six (64-58) with over a minute to play. However, Louisville was 12-for-12 from the free throw line over the final 6:28 to win it. The Pirates moved to 9-19, 4-11 BIG EAST.
