HARTFORD, Conn. - Georgetown senior Sugar Rodgers scored 26 points, including 21 in the second half to lead the Hoyas (15-15) past Providence 81-61 in the First Round of the BIG EAST women's basketball Championship presented by American Eagle Outfitters. The game was held at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
Providence sophomore Tori Rule scored a career-high 35 points to lead the Friars. She made a tournament record 10 3-pointers and shot 10-of-20 from beyond the arc. Overall she shot 11-of-24 from the field.
The Hoyas held a 37-28 lead at halftime and shot 52-percent from the field. PC sophomore Tori Rule had 20 points in the first half, but the rest of the team had just eight points.
In the second half, Rodgers' effort help pace the Hoyas, who continued their solid shooting and finished the game shooting 51-percent from the field. Georgetown also held a 50-4 edge on points in the paint.
With the win the No. 11 seed Hoyas advance to play No. 6 seed Villanova on Saturday, March 9 at 8:30 p.m., ET. The game will be televised on the BIG EAST Network across numerous regional sports networks including SNY. The contest also will be available free online at www.bigeast.tv
