Five BIG EAST Teams Earn WNIT Invites

NEW YORK – Hours after the BIG EAST saw two of its teams earn NCAA Tournament invites, the conference learned that an additional five league squads punched their tickets to the Women’s Invitation Tournament, set to begin on Wednesday, March 19. Creighton earned the BIG EAST’s automatic bid into the 64-team field while Villanova, Marquette, Butler and Seton Hall all earned at-large nods.

The Bluejays (19-13) will host Missouri on Thursday as one of three league teams to play on their home courts this postseason. Creighton enters the WNIT for the 10th time in program history and will enjoy national postseason exposure for the 15th time.

The Wildcats (22-8) will kick off WNIT action on Wednesday when they host Quinnipiac. Villanova was included in the WNIT field for the seventh time and will be competing in the national postseason for the 17th time at the Division I level.

Rounding out the host institutions from the conference is Seton Hall (18-13), which will welcome American on Thursday. SHU is headed to the postseason for the sixth time in program history and the Pirates will play in the WNIT for the fourth time overall and the first since 2007.

Butler (15-15) will travel to South Dakota State on Thursday, while Marquette (21-10) will face Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. Butler earned its sixth WNIT bid in program history and seventh national postseason berth at the Division I level. The selection into the WNIT field is Marquette’s ninth all-time and the second in as many seasons.

All times have yet to be determined, with the exception of the final round which will be at 3 p.m., airing on CBS Sports on April 5.

Butler and Marquette are playing in the WNIT for the second consecutive year, while Creighton and Villanova earned NCAA berths in 2013. Winners of the WNIT First Round games will advance to the Second Round, slated for March 22-25. All games will be played on campus sites.
