ATLANTA, Ga. – Five BIG EAST players were among the 52 candidates selected by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as All-Region nominees for the 2014 WBCA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team. The selection committee will tab the 10-member WBCA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team from the list of All-Region nominees, to be announced during the NCAA Women’s Final Four on April 5.

The selection committee uses an equation to determine a fair number of nominees from each region. The number of Division I institutions in each region is divided by the number of Division I institutions overall to determine a percentage for each region. This percentage is then multiplied by 52 (the total number of desired finalists) to get the number of finalists for each region. There are eight regions. BIG EAST Player of the Year Marissa Janning was one of four sophomores in Region 1. The Creighton guard led the league in scoring at 17.6 points per game. She was one of eight conference players to eclipse the 30-point mark this season and one of just four to do it on multiple occasions.

NCAA Tournament Sweet 16-bound DePaul had a pair of players recognized in Region 1, including junior guard Brittany Hrynko and senior forward Jasmine Penny. Hrynko and Penny were unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selections this season. Penny is the 12th-most accurate shooter in the nation, making 57.7 percent of her field goal attempts, while Hrynko is among the national leaders in assists (29th, 5.7 APG) and steals (35th, 2.46 SPG). DePaul is one of just nine teams nationally to have multiple All-Region selections this year.

Marquette senior and unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team honoree Katherine Plouffe also earned a spot on the Region 1 list after leading the Golden Eagles with her averages of 17.1 points, 10.2 rebounds this season. She was one of two BIG EAST players to average a double-double, along with unanimous Freshman of the Year Natalie Butler. Plouffe’s career totals of 1,551 points and 973 rebounds are the most among all active league players.

Sophomore guard Aliyyah Handford of St. John’s rounded out the BIG EAST honorees, earning a spot on the Region 1 list. Handford, a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection, is the Red Storm’s leading scorer (16.7 PPG) and set the program scoring standard for points by a sophomore (567).
