Louisville Joins Connecticut and Notre Dame in the Final Four

POSTSEASON CENTRAL

Box Score

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Shoni Schimmel scored 24 points and giant-slaying Louisville claimed another big upset Tuesday night, beating second-seeded Tennessee 86-78 and earning the school's second trip to the Final Four.

Two nights after taking down Brittney Griner and defending national champion Baylor, the fifth-seeded Cardinals (28-8) built a 20-point lead and then withstood a second-half comeback by the powerhouse Lady Vols (27-8) before celebrating another big victory.

When it was over, the Cardinals huddled at center court and celebrated. Tennessee headed home with a third straight loss in the regional finals, failing to make the Final Four for a fifth straight year.

Taber Spani led the Lady Vols with 20 points, and Meighan Simmons and Kamiko Williams chipped in 12 apiece.

Louisville's win puts both of the school's basketball teams in the Final Four.

Louisville joins BIG EAST teams Notre Dame and Connecticut in the Final Four marking the first time in league history three women's basketball teams have accomplished the feat in the same year. In 1985, BIG EAST men's basketball had three of the four finalists: Georgetown, St. John's and Villanova (along with Memphis).

In women's basketball history, a conference has had three teams in the Final Four just one other time as the ACC had a trio of teams in 2006 (Maryland, Duke, UNC) along with LSU.

The BIG EAST is the only Conference to accomplish the feat twice (1985 mbb and 2013 wbb).
