BIG EAST Ties Dot The London Olympics

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - With the 2012 Olympic Games beginning this weekend, a total of 52 participants and coaches with BIG EAST ties will compete in London July 25-Aug. 12. The BIG EAST group will represent 12 countries in eight sports. Ten league schools will be represented at the games, including Notre Dame with 13 competitors and Connecticut with 11 participants.

 

In addition, nine members of the USA Women's Basketball National Team hold BIG EAST connections. Six players hail from UConn (Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Tina Charles, Asjha Jones, Maya Moore and Diana Taurasi), while one is from Louisville (Angel McCoughtry). In addition, head coach Geno Auriemma (Connecticut) and assistant coach Doug Bruno (DePaul) will mentor the team.

 

BIG EAST Associate Commissioner for Women's Basketball Danielle Donehew also will be in attendance for the medal round of the tournament. She will be sending daily "Postcards From London" while onsite.

 

There also are two members of the USA Men's Basketball National Team with league ties. Carmelo Anthony (Syracuse) and assistant coach Jim Boeheim (Syracuse).

The "Games of the XXX Olympiad," as they are formally known, begin on Friday evening. In the United States, NBC and its various cable platforms plan more than 5,500 hours of coverage — plus live-streaming online via www.NBCSports.com. It begins with the Opening Ceremony and the traditional Parade of Nations. The ceremony will have touches of British greats, including William Shakespeare, the Beatles and James Bond. In addition, Queen Elizabeth II will be on hand to officially open the Games.
