Speaking today at DePaul University’s annual Tip-Off Luncheon in Chicago, BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman said that the choice of DePaul as the host and Allstate Arena as the primary venue for the 2014 BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Championship perfectly reflects the dawn of a new era for the conference.
“Our goal in selecting the BIG EAST women's tournament's first new home in a decade was to find an enthusiastic market and a venue that would best showcase the passion and skill of our teams," said Commissioner Ackerman. "Chicago and Allstate Arena, with DePaul as host, are a terrific match for the Big East, and we are thrilled to make all of them part of our season of new beginnings.”
The BIG EAST women’s regular season and championship tournament will once again feature compelling rivalries and exciting competition pitting the NCAA’s leading coaches and best student-athletes. Last year, six of the BIG EAST’s ten current member schools earned bids for post-season play.
The BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Championship will run from March 8 through March 11, 2014. Two first round games will be held at McGrath-Phillips Arena on DePaul’s campus on March 8.
The venue will shift to Allstate Arena for the four Quarterfinals games on March 9, the two Semifinals matchups on March 10, and the Finals on March 11. The Semifinal and Championship games also will air on FOX Sports 1, the new national sports channel that currently reaches 90 million homes across the United States.
The Allstate Arena has been home to the very best NCAA basketball for over 30 years having hosted DePaul Men’s Basketball and multiple NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament events,” said DePaul Director of Athletics Jean Lenti Ponsetto. “It’s a fan’s dream come true, just moments away from O’Hare International Airport and the dynamic City of Chicago.”
Added DePaul Women’s Basketball Coach Doug Bruno, “The Allstate Arena has a proud tradition of welcoming fans from all over the country to witness the finest in college basketball. It is a tremendous venue and is run by an awesome staff. Women’s basketball fans will love the arena’s location as the City of Rosemont has become one of the hottest entertainment districts in the country.”
College basketball has figured prominently in the history of the Allstate Arena. In addition to serving as the primary home for DePaul men’s basketball for three decades, the arena has previously played host to the 1987 and 1993 NCAA Men’s Tournament First and Second Rounds; the 1996 NCAA Women's Regional Finals; the 2005 NCAA Men’s Tournament Regional Finals; and the 2006 NCAA Women’s Tournament First and Second Rounds.
The Allstate Arena is also home to the WNBA’s Chicago Sky, a team that features DePaul alum – and 2008 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year – Allie Quigley.
